Our big trip this summer was to Washington D.C. We stayed with our friends, the Henns, out in Maryland and made the trip in each day so see the sights. The first day...the Capitol and the East Wing of the National Gallery of Art.
We parked at Union Station...a cool opportunity to watch the trains go in and out.
The Capitol. We scheduled a regular tour rather than one with our representative. Our verdict after the tour was that now we want to do one with our representative.
We loved walking all around the capitol and seeing what a magnificent building it is. We were impressed with how close you can actually get to it compared to so many other buildings in D.C.
We loved the tour. You wear headphones which are linked with your tour guides microphone. Lets you and the especially the kids be able to hear everything as well as look around at the same time.
This is the painting in the top of the rotunda called The Apotheosis of Washington. It shows George Washington with two women on each side (Victoria and Liberty). The 13 other women represent the 13 original colonies.
Looking at the 2 dollar bill which has one of the paintings from inside the rotunda on it.
I had to put this picture in because we actually go to see Speaker Boehner. He was walking in as we were walking out and our tour guide was fast enough to say, "Good Morning Speaker Boehner." My first D.C. celebrity siting.
Each state has 2 statues in the captiol, usually of someone important from their state. We took a picture of Helen Keller because Terefech studied her in school. It is the only statue you are allowed to touch...they want you to feel the braille on the statue.
Enjoying the capitol summer house.
